    Fourth Circuit Upholds Hospital's Right to Terminate HIV-Positive Surgeon.K. T. J. - 1995 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 23 (4):407-408.
On April 3, 1995, the Fourth Circuit upheld the right of a Maryland hospital to terminate a surgeon who was HIV-positive ). A resident in the University of Maryland Neurosurgical Training Program was dismissed when hospital administrators learned of his infection with HIV. The resident, known as Dr. Doe, claimed that his termination violated federal laws protecting persons with disabilities. The court upheld the hospital's actions as lawful and affirmed the trial court's grant of summary judgment for the hospital.Dr. Doe (...)

    Bare Particulars and Individuation Reply to Mertz.J. P. T. MorelandPickavance - 2003 - Australasian Journal of Philosophy 81 (1):1-13.
Not long ago, one of us has clarified and defended a bare particular theory of individuation. More recently, D. W. Mertz has raised a set of objections against this account and other accounts of bare particulars and proffered an alternative theory of individuation. He claims to have shown that 'the concept of bare particulars, and consequently substratum ontology that requires it, is untenable.' We disagree with this claim and believe there are adequate responses to the three arguments Mertz raises against (...)

    Interpolation in practical formal development.J. Bicarregui, T. Dimitrakos, D. Gabbay & T. Maibaum - 2001 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 9 (2):231-244.
Interpolation has become one of the standard properties that logicians investigate when designing a logic. In this paper, we provide strong evidence that the presence of interpolants is not only cogent for scientific reasoning but has also important practical implications in computer science. We illustrate that interpolation in general, and uniform splitting interpolants, in particular, play an important role in applications where formality and modularity are invoked. In recognition of the fact that common logical formalisms often lack uniform interpolants, we (...)

    Problem-solving Strategies and Expertise in Engineering Design.Linden J. Ball, Jonathan StB. T. Evans, Ian Dennis & Thomas C. Ormerod - 1997 - Thinking and Reasoning 3 (4):247-270.
A study is reported which focused on the problem-solving strategies employed by expert electronics engineers pursuing a real-world task: integrated-circuit design. Verbal protocol data were analysed so as to reveal aspects of the organisation and sequencing of ongoing design activity. These analyses indicated that the designers were implementing a highly systematic solution-development strategy which deviated only a small degree from a normatively optimal top-down and breadth-first method. Although some of the observed deviation could be described as opportunistic in nature, much (...)

Virtue, Nature, and Moral Agency in the Xunzi.Philip J. Ivanhoe & T. C. Kline (eds.) - 2000 - Hackett Publishing Company.
Xunzi is traditionally identified as the third philosopher in the Confucian tradition, after Confucius and Mencius. Unlike the work of his two predecessors, he wrote complete essays in which he defends his own interpretation of the Confucian position and attacks the positions of others. Within the early Chinese tradition, Xunzi's writings are arguably the most sophisticated and philosophically developed. This richness of philosophical content has led to a lively discussion of his philosophy among contemporary scholars. This volume collects some of (...)

    Knightly virtues : enhancing virtue literacy through stories : research report.J. Arthur, T. Harrison, D. Carr, K. Kristjánsson, I. Davidson, D. Hayes & J. Higgins - unknown
There is a growing consensus in Britain on the importance of character, and on the belief that the virtues that contribute to good character are part of the solution to many of the challenges facing modern society. Parents, teachers and schools understand the need to teach basic moral virtues to pupils, such as honesty, self-control, fairness, and respect, while fostering behaviour associated with such virtues today. However, until recently, the materials required to help deliver this ambition have been missing in (...)

Body integrity identity disorder is a very rare condition in which people experience long-standing anguish because there is a mismatch between their bodies and their internal image of how their bodies should be. Most typically, these people are deeply distressed by the presence of what they openly acknowledge as a perfectly normal leg. Some with the condition request that their limb be amputated. 1 We and others have argued that such requests should be acceded to in carefully selected patients.1–4 Consistent (...)

    A Grammar of Human Values. [REVIEW]D. T. J. - 1962 - Review of Metaphysics 15 (3):530-530.
On the basis of data gathered in a Mormon village and in a settlement of Texas homesteaders, the author sets up a schematism or "grammar" of values. The distinctions he draws between existential, normative, and idiosyncratic values seem arbitrary.--J. D. T., Jr.

Islam and the West: The Making of an Image. [REVIEW]D. T. J. - 1961 - Review of Metaphysics 15 (2):341-341.
A detailed scholarly examination of the distorted image of Islam that emerged in the West during the years 1100-1350. Although most of the book is concerned with documenting this image of Islam, Daniel also explores the motives and effects of this distortion. A series of comprehensive bibliographies is included. An authoritative, if somewhat tedious, study.--J. D. T., Jr.

    The New Capitalists. [REVIEW]D. T. J. - 1962 - Review of Metaphysics 15 (3):522-522.
A well argued plea for the establishment of a capital insurance organization on the model of the F. H. A. which would guarantee loans to small investors. Such an organization, the authors argue, would stem the tide towards increasing concentration of capital in our society and would provide for a more equitable distribution of wealth. --J. D. T., Jr.

Having defined moral responsibility as "acting in a way that will contribute to human well-being," Kimpel views moral philosophy as an empirical discipline that is concerned with the relation of means to end. However, he does not sufficiently clarify the nature of ends.--J. D. T. Jr.

Public acceptance is often seen as a key reason why water-recycling technology is rejected. A common assumption is that projects fail because the general public is unable to comprehend specialist information about risk and the belief that if the public were better informed, they would accept change more readily. This article suggests that rhetoric about acceptance is counterproductive in progressing sustainability as it does not address issues relating to institutional arrangements and reinforces a dichotomy between expert and lay groups. Instead, (...)
